Group Theory and Quasiprobability Integrals of Wigner Functions

چکیده
The integral of the Wigner function of a quantum mechanical system over a region or its boundary in the classical phase plane, is called a quasiprobability integral. Unlike a true probability integral, its value may lie outside the interval [0, 1]. It is characterized by a corresponding selfadjoint operator, to be called a region or contour operator as appropriate, which is determined by the characteristic function of that region or contour. The spectral problem is studied for commuting families of region and contour operators associated with concentric disks and circles of given radius a. Their respective eigenvalues are determined as functions of a, in terms of the Gauss-Laguerre polynomials. These polynomials provide a basis of vectors in a Hilbert space carrying the positive discrete series representation of the algebra su(1, 1) ≈ so(2, 1). The explicit relation between the spectra of operators associated with disks and circles with proportional radii, is given in terms of the discrete variable Meixner polynomials. A relativistic variant of the Wigner function
The Wigner function is a quasiprobability density over phase space (for reviews, see Lee[1], Cohen[2], or Hillery et al.[3]; a quasiprobability is generally not positive semi-definite), so in a quantum field theory setting it is not manifestly Lorentz covariant. Quasiprobabilities are conceptually interesting partly because Arthurs-Kelly type interpretations of positive definite Husimi function...
متن کاملNon-Positivity of the Wigner Function and Bounds on Associated Integrals
The Wigner function shares several properties with classical distribution functions on phase space, but is not positive-definite. The integral of the Wigner function over a given region of phase space can therefore lie outside the interval [0, 1]. The problem of finding bestpossible upper and lower bounds for a given region is the problem of finding the greatest and least eigenvalues of an asso...

The presence of unique quantum correlations is the core of quantum-information processing and general quantum theory. We address the fundamental question of how quantum correlations of a generic quantum system can be probed using correlation functions defined for quasiprobability distributions. In particular, we discuss the possibility of probing the negativity of a quasiprobability by comparin...

The theory of quantum propagator and time–dependent integrals of motion in quantum optics is reviewed as well as the properties of Wigner function, Q– function, and coherent state representation. Propagators and wave functions of a free particle, harmonic oscillator, and the oscillator with varying frequency are studied using time–dependent linear in position and momentum integrals of motion. S...

I. Abstract Wigner functions play a central role in the phase space formulation of quantum mechanics. Although closely related to classical Liouville densities, Wigner functions are not positive definite and may take negative values on subregions of phase space. We investigate the accumulation of these negative values by studying bounds on the integral of an arbitrary Wigner function over nonco...
